Surrey athletes strike gold
Surrey retained the Broadbridge Trophy as best overall county at the English Schools' Championships. The county's young athletes improved on 2009 with a haul of eight golds, six silvers and nine bronzes in Birmingham, compared to six golds, 11 silvers and two bronzes 12 months ago. Surrey also won the intermediate and senior boys’ team trophies.
The following athletes won gold medals:
- Pole vault - Ned Quincey (senior boys), Jack Phipps (intermediate boys)
- 400m hurdles - Jacob Paul (intermediate boys)
- Triple Jump - Babatunde Amosu (senior boys)
- 400m - Joshua Street (intermediate boys)
- Hammer - Andrew Jordan (senior boys)
- Discuss - Lawrence Okoye (senior boys), Nathan Carty (junior discuss)
Peter Martin, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, said: "Surrey has some of the best schools in the country and this remarkable effort on the track and in the field is further proof of that. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to produce such outstanding results and I would like to congratulate every contestant involved in helping Surrey to be the best in the country. It is hugely encouraging to have so many talented athletes in Surrey with the 2012 London Olympics just around the corner."
Jack Phipps from Woking Athletics Club and Ruth Haynes from Aldershot, Farnham and District Club were both selected to represent England in Saturday's schools' international in Glasgow.
